4-part Parent & Me Urban Homesteading (Sherman Oaks)

Learn what’s spiritual about gardening and what inherently connects us all – while spending time with your Little One! Roll up your sleeves, give your kid(s) grit, and get healthy! Meet and tend chickens, worms, & fish! Each hour-long session includes: a bug Hunt, Fresh Garden Snacks; Circle Meditation, Earth Art, & Planting / Composting, barefoot in the garden!

Still on the Fence? Grit:

Do you and your Little One love to make things with your own hands? Want to learn how things grow and decompose, and gain useful skills while spending time with your kid?

Research shows that perseverance builds your Little One’s confidence to learn motivation and connect to self, spirit, and long-term goals. There is no better place than the garden to grow grit! Sessions will build character, skills and knowledge that you can bring home to your own garden and kitchen.

Explore Seed-to-Table philosophies with Netiya that encourage play, exploration and hands-on learning in community through aquaponics, greywater, composting, and water-wise food production. Connect with the butterflies and bees, medicinal herbs, food-bearing plants, vines, and fruit trees! Learn to grow food! Build healthy soil while decomposing your kitchen scraps with different kinds of compost piles replete with worms, insects and microbes. Snack on garden-sourced, kid-friendly culinary treats! Parents and Little Ones will leave with an understanding of where our food comes from, and how to grow it. Proceeds go to the award-winning organization netiya.org to address food insecurity on faith-based lands in LA.

“As a parent, of all the great classes I do with my children, Netiya’s Seedlings Sprout! is the most enriching experience I have with my toddler – it is equally beneficial for the parent and the child.” Marissa Nadjarian

FAQ’S:

What does a typical class look like? Netiya starts each class with a Nature Hunt in the garden for all of the children and parents, (please arrive on time whenever possible). We then move into an activity focused on the day’s theme. Together, we rest and enjoy our garden snack in the shade and end with an observation/mindful meditation.

What do I do if my child has food or bee allergies? Our classes are nut-free, all food grown/served is non-GMO, and organic. We ask that parents don’t pack nut related snacks and we serve no nuts as part of our programming. We can accommodate additional food allergies and will work with you to ensure your child is able to participate in the garden snacks during the session. There is always the presence of honeybees in the garden. If your child has a severe allergy and has an epipen, the instructors will carry this epipen with them at all times and we will work with you to create a medical plan that feels comfortable to you.

What precautions are taken in relation to the sun and heat? We have a shade structure and a fan. We always have water available, and invite parents to closely monitor water intake to ensure they and their child stay adequately hydrated. Each participant is required to wear a sun hat during the day.

Netiya empowers people to grow food on faith-based lands in LA. Rooted in ancient traditions of land stewardship and earth-based wisdom, together we plant – growing food to mitigate hunger and to nourish the spirit. Netiya’s urban homestead grows heaps of yummy organic food in our yard and raises chickens. The home is entirely pesticide-free and as water-wise as possible given the insane heat of the Valley.
